THERMAL DISPERSION: THE BEST COATING FOR INTERCOOLERS
Heat Dispersant Coatings are the Ultimate in Performance Cooling
CSF customers are always looking for anything that can give them a competitive edge. Once the design and engineering are maximized though, what more can you do? The engineering team here at CSF asked that same question and the answer was Thermal Dispersant/Dispersion coatings.
Thermal Dispersant/Dispersion coatings aren’t super new, but they have not be heavily used the aftermarket performance industry. However, when looking for ways to improve intercooler performance for the most demanding clientele, it was worth testing.
What is a Thermal Dispersant/Dispersion Coating and how does it work?
Thermal Dispersant/Dispersion Coatings are submicron coatings with extremely high thermal conductivity. Due to their density and chemical composition they offer highly efficient heat transfer. In the case of a coated heat exchanger like an intercooler, the higher thermal conductivity of the coating helps draw heat to the surface of the part. As air passes over the intercooler that higher conductivity increases the rate at which the heat is drawn from the system. The resulting benefits are compounding. The faster dissipation of heat from the surface of the intercooler creates a larger gradient of thermodynamic disequilibrium. Consequently, heat is drawn out of the intercooler more rapidly. This benefit combined with the already highly efficient CSF Intercooler systems produces the best heat management possible.
In very simple terms, these coatings act as a massive heat sink for your heat exchanger (in this case the intercooler).
What does this mean exactly? There will be a small improvement in the amount of heat that the intercooler is able to remove from the system and in turn lowering your IATs. However, the biggest benefit will be in the coolers ability to combat heat soak. The faster an intercooler system can disperse/dissipate heat, the less heat soak the system will experience.
OTHER BENEFITS
While the cooling improvement is the biggest benefit of this coating, it’s definitely not the only one. A satin black finish gives your engine bay a very OEM+ high performance look. Black finishes have been the most popular finish on aftermarket parts for years because of look they invoke. Think of a black suit, black tie, and black shoes. They’re just classy, timeless, and never go out of style.
The coating not only looks amazing with its stealthy satin black color, it is also incredibly durable. The coating has a Scratch/Pencil Hardness of 7H. This is the same hardness and scratch resistance as Quartz. It is also resistant to chemicals that you’ll typically find or use in an engine bay. Gasoline, Carb Cleaner, and most other engine cleaning products will not damage the finish.
